Latin American Congress of Social and Environmental Sciences will be held in Warsaw in June 16-19, 2025 under the title: “Towards Environmental and Spatial Justice: The Role of Geography and Territorial Planning”. It will incorporate the XXIV Polish-Mexican Symposium and the V Polish-Colombian Symposium.
The Congress will be held in the building of the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies of the University of Warsaw.
Today, the social and environmental sciences face significant challenges due to the climate crisis, large-scale migrations, ongoing conflicts, and deteriorating living conditions for a substantial portion of the global population. Recognizing the social responsibility inherent in scientific practice, this congress aims to diagnose injustices and inequalities and to explore ways to address and remedy them. In this Congress we are focusing on the concepts of spatial justice and environmental justice.
In addition to fostering scientific exchange, the congress aims to enable scientists to fulfill their societal responsibilities, particularly towards its most vulnerable members. By combining perspectives and experiences from Europe and the Americas, the congress will enhance its positive impact on both science and society.
The following main thematic axes were formulated:
- Wealth of resources and the perspective of the benefits of their use: any conflict
- Divided societies: structures and internal relationships, and their spatial representation
- Authorities versus citizens’ needs and expectations: strategies and actions, both overt and covert
- Lost, hidden, and marginalized societies: their rootedness in the territory
- Mechanisms, tools, and technologies to support local and regional development
- Alternative development and alternatives to development
- Territorial justice paradigm versus competition for rent – local and global agents
- Environmental migration
